Canon Point: Walking into the Citadel after Ifrit's defeat.
Canon History: Wiki~
Personality:
Gladio has had his entire life defined by one key role. His purpose, set for him from birth, was to follow in his father's footsteps. Shield of the King. His sole focus for his entire life has been to protect his Prince and one day King.
There are many ways that Gladio does this and some are more effective than others. The most basic is the extensive military training that he has gone through since his youth. He has always been eager to develop his physical skills, enjoying the rush of battle and pushing himself to the limits. He is an incredibly imposing figure and has been since he was a teen.
To counter how physically intimidating he can be Gladio is often seen smiling and laughing. He will follow in his father's footsteps but that doesn't mean he needs to be his father. Gladio acts as something of a big brother to everyone. Playful and teasing, always there to call out someone's bullshit or take a well-meaning jab at their weaknesses.
Sometimes he will take that teasing too far, taking it upon himself to defend Noctis from his own bad habits. He gets on the Prince's case fairly often, refusing to take any excuses for bad behavior. This is most obvious when he finally snaps and starts a yelling match with Noctis on the train after Altissia.
Gladio doesn't do well without something to do, a battle to fight, some physical challenge he can overcome to correct a problem. So when he's put in a situation that has no easy solution he becomes frustrated and angry, sometimes lashing out even at the people he cares most about. Even when he leaves the group to seek a way to better himself by taking on the challenge of the blademaster he misses the point, a bit. He is willing to risk everything to ensure he is powerful enough to protect Noctis. Instead of taking Cor's advice, however, and reflecting on the fact that not every battle can be won with brute strength alone, or that if he dies in the challenge he will not be able to look after Noctis, Gladio only becomes more stubbornly determined that he will triumph through force of will alone.
And he does.
As heavily focused on the physical as he is though Gladio is also very good at talking to people, making friends and lightening the mood when he wants to. He's quick to laugh and treats everyone equally, so long as they don't threaten the Prince. Like Noctis he can and does put on a good show for formal appearances but Gladio's more comfortable in a bar or the training barracks, joking with other soldiers and talking shit over a card game than he will ever be in court. Much to his father's disappointment.
There are some major changes that take place over the 10 years since Noctis went into the crystal, however. Gladio, the hunters, what's left of the Glaive, they've all been fighting an endless and futile battle to keep the daemons out of the cities, slowly losing more and more of their home to the darkness. Citizens turned to monsters in the endless night until there's one city left, one city to house all that remains of an entire kingdom's populace. There has been so much loss it has weighed heavily on everyone.
Gladio is tired, exhausted by the constant fight but always there, always ready to take on another battle. Necessity and the well-being of the few people he has left, his sister and friends, drives him ever onward despite the futility of their fight. He believes in Noctis, certainly, but he's too well-trained not to plan for the worst case scenario. Hope is often impractical and while he will always defend his King he will also plan for what will happen if he never returns.

Abilities:
- Warrior: Gladio has been training in martial arts since he was 13. His entire life he has been preparing to be the King's Shield. It's something he has always taken very seriously. Now, at 32, he has been in an active war zone for just over a decade. All in all this makes him a very formidable warrior.
- Sword & Shield: His specialties are weilding a two-handed oversized great-sword and a tower shield.
- Strength: Gladio is a very powerfully built man. As early on as Episode Gladiolus, he is able to pull up 8+ foot stone pillars and wield them as a weapon to do extra damage to armored foes.
- King's Shield: One of the things Gladio takes most pride in, however, is not his strength but his endurance. He was (quite literally) built to take hits for his King.
- Survival: Gladio is described as being a "consumate outdoorsman". He enjoys being out in the wilds and, while they have a great number of luxuries for Noctis' sake, he'd be perfectly content staying out on the road and never stopping in town. He has a sharp eye for tracks and useful items, as well as a great deal of knowledge on how to take what you need from nature.
- Armiger: With Noctis present he is able to summon his sword and shield from the armiger. While he still has this ability at his canonpoint his own paranoia and military background do have him physically carrying these items with him more often.
- Healing: With Noctis present they have access to healing items such as potions and the like. Gladio is loathe to draw from their stores which they may well need for the final battle, however. He has basic first aid training from early in his military training, however, and has only learned more over the last decade.
